The project deals with the architectural design for a new holiday home, which is located οn a large and flat plot very close to the beach of Agia Marina, just outside the village of Douneika, Ilia, Greece. The aim was to design a modern holiday home with a total building area close to 100 sqm, which can accommodate two couples at the same time especially during the summer. With this as a given, the floor plan is organised so that two large bedrooms are placed symmetrically and at a distance from each other occupying the two ends of a rectangular building. Access to each bedroom is from a separate hallway with a wardrobe, while each bedroom has its own bathroom. In the central part of the house, between the bedrooms, a large open space is planned where the common living areas are accommodated, such as the living room, the dining room and the kitchen. Characteristic of the house are the large openings that articulate the entire south elevation, ensuring plenty of natural light and ventilation, unobstructed views of the unique landscape of the area and direct access to the covered terrace, which extends along the entire length of the building encouraging semi-outdoor life. The tiled roof, characteristic of the local architecture, is treated as a key morphological element of the house. The bold cantilever to the south protects the house in summer from the strong midday sun and storms, while facilitating the unobstructed view from the inside of the house to the countryside. The projection of the roof to the north, combined with small symmetrical protrusions of the building volume, forms the threshold. The compact rectangular volume of the house is arranged along the east-west axis, taking advantage of the ideal site orientation. The construction of the building envelope is made of prefabricated wooden walls, which are based on a slab of reinforced concrete. The exterior walls are lined with thermal insulation and plastered. The architectural design of the new holiday home is inspired by the forms of local architecture, while at the same time trying to leave its own special mark on the landscape.
